Hunsæl is a playful and decorative seal made of oak. Hunsæl's raw and simple expression, provided by the pure wood, is perfectly complemented by a more childlike aesthetic, making it ideal as a decoration on shelves, windowsills, and chests of drawers. Hunsæl is the large version of Chresten Sommer's cute seals. It brings back memories of walks on the beach when the sweet spotted seals suddenly poke their heads out of the sea or bask in the sun on rocks or sandbanks.
It is Chresten Sommer's ambition that his designs should bring joy and create a warm atmosphere. With his seals in warm, dark wood, he hits the mark and delivers interior pieces that make a difference in your home. It is also a very good gift idea as a host or hostess gift.
Hunsæl is designed with inspiration from Kay Bojesen and draws on the strong Danish and Nordic tradition of animal design and interior decor with animals.
What is unique about Chresten Sommer's seals is that their heads are movable, allowing you to create many different expressions by tilting the seal's head in various directions. And if you have both Hunsæl and Babysæl, the movable heads offer great possibilities for interaction between the animals.
Chresten Sommer has always been fascinated by working with wood. First as a boat builder and then as a designer of wooden interiors. When he works, he is only satisfied when he feels it is his best design – even if it takes several attempts. And he has both his head and his drawers full of drawings for new designs.
At the age of 18, he applied for an apprenticeship as a plumber but was unsuccessful. Instead, he was offered an apprenticeship as a boat builder, and he has been there ever since. And even though trimarans and hand-turned wooden figures seem like different worlds, both are in his hands, he explains.
“Both are about processing wood. And I appreciate the versatile craftsmanship involved in building boats. It encompasses both larger and, especially, finer woodworking. Although it certainly takes less time to turn a seal, the craftsmanship is similar,” he says.
Chresten’s designs must appeal to both genders of all ages. They must be simple, emphasize the raw aesthetics of the wood, and ideally combine the natural with the childlike and sweet. And, of course, always hand-turned.
